about

West Wind is a sequel. About ten years ago I was in a duo called 'Comrade Robot' and we had a song about a man with a face like the moon called 'Old Moon Face'.

This song imagines him living as a hermit in some reed filled wilderness, hoping that someone will come looking for him. He's sending out messages to them, they're not responding.

It's a weird, lonely kinda song.

Musically we've got all the time signatures here - verses in 7, chorus in 5s and 6s. I really like the keyboard solo after the second chorus. I'm not much of a keyboard player so this is mostly programmed rather than played 'live' but I think it sounds pretty good.

lyrics

Maybe they're dead
Maybe they moved away
Wrote all of his feelings down
They haven't replied
Tied them to balloons and then
Let them float away
Into the sky
They haven't replied

One minute longer, while the west wind still blows

Yellowing scrolls
A pen that he carved himself
Flying kites in the sun
He only wants to be seen
He could not say out loud what he's scared is true
They haven't replied cos they no longer care

One minute longer, while the west wind still blows

Under the words and behind all the letters
All of the message he tried to send
Over the reeds and behind the horizon
Somewhere he knows the west wind must blow
Tried sending smoke signals, tried waving flags
Screamed himself hoarse but he's had no reply

Maybe he'd stop, an unwilling hermit
but not when there's a faint breeze in the sky

Only one minute longer
One minute longer
While the west wind still blows
