about

Why don't you write a song about yourself, Tom? Tell us what you really think, what you really feel.

Well, this one sort of does that, in that via slightly rubbish crossword clues and allusions, this song says 'people are rubbish'.

That's it. No subtleties or depth. People aren't any good is the point of this song.

Erm.

Sorry. Not you, obviously. Whoever isn't reading this is who I mean. Obviously.

Musically it's a song of two halves, a relatively upbeat 7/8 verse into a 4/4 chorus, then a second half in 5s that switches between C minor and A minor. Some great drumming from Michael on this one too. I think it might be the strongest song on the album.

lyrics

A coastal scene crawling east
All the dogs aglow
The whole thing'd look so beautiful
If only they could go
With it all set alight
With it all set ablaze

A spider’s wish for easy prey
A deer in headlight's gaze
The world would look so beautiful
Finally set ablaze
When it crumbles to dust
When it crumbles to ash

Our Tinfoil King stands all alone
He says ‘Are you what they sent? Are you dangerous?’
Your lights are on there's no-one home
You got your cardboard sword
You got your little throne

Scratching out your name in dust
Pissing in a ditch
The stars above are meaningless when you’re clawing at an itch

Our Tinfoil King stands all alone
He says ‘Are you what they sent? Are you dangerous?’
Your lights are on there's no-one home
You got your cardboard sword
You got your little throne

Our keen edge should cut us
But something's dulled our blade
This dirty devil weakness
That made us all afraid

Before this creeping plague that
Pines for better flesh
This Dirty Devil Weakness
That made us all forget
