about

Modern World is about that feeling I assume we all get when talking to certain people - the nagging doubt that they are in fact real people. You see them on TV all the time, people with shiny skin, perfect hair, flawless teeth.

More generally it's about the feeling that there are parts of the modern world that make genuine human connection difficult.

Lyrically this is a frankenstein song in that it has three disparate ideas that were written at different times forced together. There's an indie rock song verse and singalong chorus, there's a weird funny time signature prog rock middle 8 and there's a section made entirely of sounds I created in my bathroom with some water and a wine glass.

lyrics

Can you see her eyes shine
Do you see a wonder of the modern world?
Perfected and selected
Manufactured from the finest cloth and pearls
Latex lips and courtesies perfected
Who needs modern girls when the world’s been making dolls as good as this?

Do you see the muscles move under his flesh
Looks as good as the real thing
Can run a hundred miles and never lose his smile and never ask for anything
His rubber beauties just skin deep and perfect
Who needs modern boys when the toys that you can buy are as good as this

Paper money’s just as good as the ropes around your wrist
Do you exist, do you exist or have you started to live?

Arms out deep breath just start screaming no
They’ll grab you and drag you back in
Oh I told you so
The modern world it just won’t let you go.

Did you know your teeth are unnaturally straight underneath your perfect hair.
Got yourself a tie and all the latest trends but inside there’s nothing there
Latex thoughts and factory processed feelings
Who needs modern men when the ones that you buy are as good as this?

Paper money’s just as good as the ropes around your wrist
Do you exist, do you exist or have you started to live?

Arms out deep breath just start screaming no
They’ll grab you and drag you back in
Oh I told you so
The modern world it just won’t let you go.

The devil take the hindmost
So don’t be at the back
Don’t be so slow to judge
Slow to react
The hidebound will be bitten on their heels
So I won’t be early and I won’t be too late for the men of experiment.
Wide awake watching the sun-rise
The city on the horizon, teeth against the sky, over-crowded with all these empty people
I want you here with me in our forest cold
